November/December 2007

Welcome to the Fall/Winter Season and being firmly back to work after Summer Holidays.  Our apologies to everyone for cancelling the last Ontario Chapter technical session.  Thursday, September 6th was to be an evening of Eddy Current Inspection in Nuclear Steam Generators hosted by Intech International in Dundas.  But we're back to work and the nuclear business waits for no man, the Intech presenters were called to a shut down earlier than planned so they had to cancel at the last minute. All at Intech asked me to extend their regrets.    We are working to re-schedule the evening for mid-January and will keep you updated.
I've noticed that the stores are already taking down the Halloween candy and putting up their Christmas displays and so, with Christmas approaching much too quickly, here's a reminder that our next social function is the Ontario Chapter Christmas party. Mark the date in your calendar and register early.
This is always well attended and the Chapter, with the help of Judy and Bob Stait, always put on a great evening.  This year we are going to go back to Flamborough Hills Golf and Country Club on December 15, 2007.  More details can be found at www.cinde.ca/ontario/events.phtml.   We look forward to seeing everyone for an evening of good company, good food, and dancing.

As part of a continuing learning series, CINDE presented a day long seminar on "Advances in Electro Magnetic Techniques" in Hamilton.  Ed Brain and Ankit Vajpayee from Russell NDE Systems Inc. presented a historical overview and went on to discuss advances in the technology.  I attended the seminar, along with CINDE members from both Ontario and Quebec.

These seminars are offered for information purposes to our members, people in industry and they welcome all that can attend. They are geared to be of an informative nature to keep you up-to-date with the new applications in our NDT field.  Now that the Western office is open in Edmonton, I am sure CINDE would be open to starting the series there as well.  If you have topics that you would like to hear more about, or if you would like to present on a topic in which you have an interest, please contact CINDE.  You can keep posted on upcoming seminars by visiting the CINDE website, www.cinde.ca

On behalf of the Ontario Chapter, I would like to wish you and Yours' a Happy Safe Holiday Season.

September/October 2007

Well as much as I hate to admit it summer is drawing to a close. I hope that everyone enjoyed some time off to relax and recharge, but it is time to be getting back to work.

Over the summer I was invited to the CINDE National Board meeting to present Cindy Finley of Utex Scientific Instruments an award, making her a Fellow of CINDE.  This recognition is given to someone who has made continued, significant, contributions to the advancement of NDT.

The Ontario Chapter was happy to nominate Cindy, only the fourth person to be given this award since 2000, in appreciation for her efforts working with us.  Cindy is past president of Ontario Chapter and is still actively involved in our chapter as Councilor.  Cindy is also on the CINDE National Board of Directors, and of course involved with UTEX projects around the world.

As part of the proceedings other members of the National Board were recognized for their long term contributions in some cases more than 20 years.   Many new members were welcomed to the National Board, giving the Board new eyes and new perspectives on the future.

Ontario Chapter Board is always looking for new members and new perspectives as well.  To help make a contribution and provide insight and direction into the industry at a local level, please contact me. We are happy to welcome new members.

This month's Journal focus is on the Nuclear Industry.  In Ontario, power generation is an important part of the NDT industry as a source of work but also as a source of innovation in NDT.   Some very sophisticated inspections have evolved out of the needs in the Power Generation Industry.

May/June 2007

Spring is here and I think that everyone is looking forward to the better weather ahead.  I know I am!

The first thing I want to do is to say thanks to our technical experts for their presentations so far this year.   Thanks to Dr. Michael Moles for his presentation on "Application of Time-Of-Flight Diffraction (TOFD) for Weld Inspections" in February.

Thanks as well to Dr. Afshin Shadri for his presentation in March on "Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Technique for Refractory Lining Thickness and Condition Monitoring in Operating Metallurgical Vessels".  I know that everyone who came to the lectures appreciates the time and effort that go into preparing for evenings like this.

In the last issue of the Journal I reviewed the discussion on the Future of CINDE for members who could not be present.  John Zirnhelt and Dennis Domenichini from the CINDE National Board and Doug Marshall, Managing Director of CINDE, spoke about the concept of the Canadian NDT Community becoming self regulated.

The most common question that I heard was, “Would there be a second certifying body along with NRCan?”  During the discussion in January the answer to this question was “no”.  There is no need for two certifying bodies.  The expectation is that the NDT Community address the support for a recognized certifying body as per the requirement of ISO17024.

I know that CINDE, voice of the NDT Community wants communication from members and encourages you to get involved in this topic and any topic that interests you.  Please contact your National Office info@cinde.ca to address your questions/concerns, etc.

Upcoming events include a technical discussion of tubular eddy current. There will be more information on the web site as the date and location are confirmed.  We will send out email invitations as well.

March/April 2007

Thanks to John Zirnhelt, Dennis Domenichini and Doug Marshall for putting on the discussion on the future of CINDE. This important meeting was well attended but I've been asked to present some of the ideas expressed so that any of our chapter members that couldn't make it are informed of the direction that CINDE is considering.

The topic of discussion was "NDE Certification - CINDE's Role". Some members of CINDE have suggested that perhaps CINDE should become directly involved in the certification process, in a manner similar to the process that exists in most other countries, with a certification body that is responsible to the membership of that organization.

In most countries it is the NDT Society that grants NDT certification. The society is normally made up of industry leaders, academics and individual members that direct the activities of the society, implement standards and maintain records of the certified members.

In Canada it is the governmental organization, the Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB), develops the standards for many industries, including ours. The CGSB Committee on NDT is a committee of industry, government and academia from NDT that write the NDT standards by consensus. The standards are voluntary, but as we know, have become almost second nature to us in the industry.

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) manages the nation-wide program for the certification of individuals performing nondestructive   testing to the National Standard of Canada (CAN/CGSB-48.9712-2006). This standard also allows for other organizations to become recognized certifying bodies. A certifying body must meet the criteria set out in the standard, which include conformance to ISO/IEC 17024 and must be supported by a technical committee.

In March last year CINDE met with NRCan staff to discuss the concept of a self-regulated NDT certification program managed by the NDT community versus a government certification program. At that time CINDE revised its By-laws and Constitution to allow CINDE to become a certifying body in accordance with ISO 9712 & ISO 17024.

If CINDE goes ahead with the plan to become a certifying agency, the Standards Council of Canada will use CAN/CGSB 48.9712:2005 to monitor the way CINDE conducts itself. CINDE is looking for your input on where you see its future.

Please contact CINDE with your comments.

John Zirnhelt, Chair - CINDE Board of Directors

Dennis Domenichini, Chair - CINDE Long Range Planning Committee

Doug Marshall, CINDE Managing Director

Upcoming Chapter events include a Time of flight diffraction technical discussion on Monday February 26th, and in March, "Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Technique for Refractory Lining Thickness and Condition Monitoring in Operating Metallurgical Vessels". Please check the website for details. We will be sending out invitations by email as well.

January/February 2007
It was a busy month at the Ontario Chapter. Walter Weber at UTEX Scientific hosted our Technical Session on "Advanced Ultrasonic Techniques for Non Contact, High Penetration and Large Area Scanning.  Thanks to Jeff Gilbert who showed how to use air-coupled ultrasonics to solve speed, penetration and contamination problems associated with water coupling and Dave Seto for describing how signal processing can increase dynamic range and improve near surface resolution for critical inspections.  Both speakers made the session very interesting and informative. Our annual Christmas Party was a hit, as always. The Ontario Chapter is once again indebted to Judy Stait for doing a great job in organizing the event. Special thanks for all the great presents. Looking forward into the New Year; Mr. John Zirnhelt will be giving a session on "NDE Certification - CINDE's Role". This is scheduled for Tuesday, January 16th, 2007. Try to attend. Your opinions count.

The author, Mr. Michael Moles, from the technical paper published in the November/December 2006 issue of the Journal will be giving a technical session on Time-Of-Flight Diffraction (TOFD) for Weld Inspections”, Monday, February 26th, 2007.  Michael will discuss the latest news on TOFD codes, guidelines and interpretation manuals. Dinner will start at 6:30 with the discussion to follow at approximately 8:00. The discussion is free to attend and dinner will be $30.00. An email notification will be sent about locations as these dates approach and you can register with me at: pkaszuba@pulsceho.ca

If you have an idea for a future discussion please let us know. Check for current event information:  http://www.cinde.ca/ontario/events.phtml

Spring has finally sprung! We can now put the cold winter behind us.

On March 22nd, the Ontario Chapter held a technical session on "Wire Rope Inspection" presented by Mr. Shawn Steffler and Mr. Kirk Fletcher, both from Canspec Group - Sarnia and we would like to take this opportunity to thank them both for a very interesting topic and great presentation. They provided us with a very informative session.

I am pleased to announce that we had a full house, made up of our members and non-members.

I would also like to thank all who attended. It was really great to see that there was such interest in the topic of wire rope inspection. It just goes to show how new methods of inspection can create such interest in the NDT industry!

January/February 2005

It is hard to believe that we are already into the 3rd month of the year. Promising thoughts will hopefully bring the warmth of spring. It's just around the corner, really!

On Tuesday, January 25th, Ontario Chapter held its first meeting of the 2005 year. Despite the fury of mother nature with the winter storm she poured on us, the tour of Kelowna Flightcraft was well attended. On behalf of the Chapter and all in attendance, we would like to extend our appreciation to Kelowna Flightcraft for the tour of their facilities. We would also like to thank Tim Deagnon and Marcel Martin for making us all feel very welcome and for giving us a very informative tour. It was a perfect example of the broad spectrum of NDT used in the aerospace industry.

Upcoming events are as follows:

  • March, Wire Rope Inspection - Technical Session
  • April, Messier Dowty Aerospace- Tour

Keep checking the CINDE website under Ontario Chapter Events for the latest updates.

Please keep in mind the Ontario Chapter is always looking for ideas from members and non-members. If you have any feedback or ideas, please feel free to contact me directly. November/December 2004

Happy New Year! I hope all of you had a safe and happy holiday season.

I would like to introduce myself as the new Ontario Chapter Chair taking over for Judy Stait who has recently retired. Judy has done a great job over the last 3 years as Chair organizing and dedicating herself and time to help promote our Ontario Chapter. At this time I would like to wish her a wonderful, well deserved retirement and we can only hope that Judy will still always be a part of the Ontario Chapter.

Unfortunately the car rally on September 26th was cancelled due to lack of interest. We will have to try again in 2005 to see who will be next to take home the coveted trophy. On Wednesday, October 20 th the Ontario Chapter held a wine tour at Kittling Ridge Winery. The dinner and ambience were great!

The technical session held November 9, 2004 on "ICNDT Objectives and Our NDT Community" was well received. Mr. Douglas Marshall gave a detailed presentation on international perspectives on qualifications and certification of NDT personnel. He also went on to explain the history, objectives, current activities and relayed information about the International Committee for Nondestructive Testing (ICNDT) of which he now Chairs.

The Ontario Chapter's annual Christmas dinner and dance was held at the Quality Inn, Oakville on Saturday November 27th, 2004. We had a small but quaint turn out. It was a great evening full of good food, great music and lots of prizes for our guests. The annual Christmas dinner and dance was a great way to kick off your holiday season amongst good friends.

The Ontario Chapter Executive has big plans for this year's activities and we hope that it will be a good year!!! If anyone is interested in being part of the CINDE Executive, please contact myself or visit the website at www.cinde.ca under Chapter News. We are always looking for new people with ideas to share.

September/October 2004

We are finally into Fall and the 2004-2005 season and we are not off to a great start. We thought a lot of engines would be revving at the Annual Car Rally, but due to lack of registration it had to be cancelled.

Look for follow-up of the wine Tour in the January/February 2005 Journal.

The Executive met on October 5th to discuss next year's program. We still welcome any of your ideas for technical sessions that will help bring our membership together. We are also reaching out to members that are interested in participating on the Executive to help make the Chapter a very active and successful one.

Tuesday, November 9th will be the last technical session of this year and will be presented by Mr. Douglas Marshall, who as most of you know, has been elected ICNDT Chair. Mr. Marshall will give a presentation on; ICNDT objectives and how they will affect our NDT community. He will also touch on ICNDT Recommended Guidelines for Qualification and Certification of NDT Personnel according to ISO 9712.

The Annual Christmas Dinner Dance will be held Saturday, November 27, 2004 at the Quality Hotel on Bronte Road.

This will be my last official duty as Ontario Chapter Chair as Dan Gonzalez will take over after Christmas.

At this time, I would like to thank all the people I have met and who have helped me during the last 3 years. It has been a very rewarding experience andI wish Dan Gonzalez all the best in his new position.

I had the pleasure of attending the 16th world conference in Montreal, August 30th - September 3rd, 2004. It was wonderful to see all the attendees from various countries. It was also a pleasure to see many old and new friends that I have made in my years with CINDE. I found the conference well organized and very informative.

Congratulation to all the organizers.

July/August 2004

I would like to welcome everyone back from a very cool summer to our 2004-2005 season. Hopefully we will have a lovely fall to make up for the summer.

The Ontario Chapter Executive met to confirm upcoming event dates on August 12, 2004 and finished the evening off with a cozy BBQ.

In the next Journal I will be reporting on the 16th WCNDT conference.

Just a little bit about the New Year's program, we have worked hard to bring you an interesting season this year. It will start with the 3rd annual Car Rally on September 26th, 2004. Your engines will start revving at 10:00 a.m. from the Royal Coachman in Waterdown. As in previous years, we will end the rally with lunch and a presentation of the trophy. I would like to extend congratulations to Dan Gonzalez, your new - Ontario Chapter Chairman, and Jackie Stait on their upcoming union of marriage. Jackie and Kate Stait winners of the 2nd Annual Car Rally will not be there to defend their title, as Jackie Stait and Dan Gonzalez will be on their honeymoon.

The wine tour will be in October check the CINDE website for more details. This has been a great hit in the past so I know many of you will want to book this event early.

The Christmas dinner and dance will take place at the Quality Inn, Oakville on Saturday, November 27th, 2004.

We are also looking for new members for the Ontario Chapter CINDE Executive; if you are interested please contact myself or CINDE directly.

May/June 2004

We are coming to the close of another CINDE Ontario Chapter year. In reviewing the past year, we have had some very interesting events.

The year began with our second annual car rally, which was, as usual, a blast. Our tours were well attended. Unfortunately, we still seem to have a problem with attendance at the technical sessions. If there is anything you would like to see or a topic to discuss, please don't hesitate to contact any member of the Ontario Chapter Executive or myself. New ideas are always welcome.

Our year concluded with a beautiful tour of the Toronto Harbourfront. It began early evening. The scenery was beautiful from daylight right into the sunset. The view was breathtaking, the food was wonderful and there was dancing and lots of socializing. Fun was had by all.

As many of you know, I should be stepping down as Chair in June. Unfortunately, Tony Skinner was to take the position, but with his recent move west, I have agreed to stay on until December at which time Dan Gonzalez has accepted the position of Chair. I look forward to working with you for a few more months.

I would like to wish you all a great and safe summer.

    Judy Stait
Mar/Apr 2004

Spring has finally come. It has been a far too long and cold winter. Your Ontario Chapter Membership Executive Committee met in April and we have set up another full itinerary for this upcoming year.

April 13th, 2004 at the Travelodge Inn in Burlington, was the last technical meeting. We had the pleasure of Norm Harding, who I am sure many of you know and respect, that gave a presentation on the topic of, "NDT Certification Past, Present and Future".

We will be wrapping up the 2003-2004 Programme Schedule with, back by popular demand, a boat cruise of Toronto harbour and installation of officers. Come and bring your family. We will cruise for 4 hours and enjoy a casual BBQ, music and the sites of the city. See details below and register early.

We will start the 2004-2005 Programme with our Annual Car Rally, late September. Jackie and Kate Stait, I am sure, will try to maintain their "TITLE" for 2004.

The 2004-2005 Programmed Schedule will be posted on the Canadian Society for NDE's webpage, http://www.cinde.ca/ontario/events.shtml. Keep a close eye for upcoming events.

I would like to wish everyone a great summer and will look forward to seeing many of you in September at the Car Rally.

Jan/Feb 2004

Already two months have passed since the beginning of 2004 and we are setting the pace with a full meeting schedule.

Our first technical session of the year was held on Tuesday, January 13th and it was very successful. The subject was "Progress and Implementation of Digital Radiography Systems" and judging from the turn out it was a subject that held lots of interest to those who attended. We would like to take the time to thank John Stecjuk and Dent McIntyre of Cooperheat for bringing Greg Pupchek, Virtual Media Integration (VMI), all the way from sunny warm Florida to talk to us on such a cold evening.

It is great to see our members continuing to set the standard for great turnouts.

On Sunday, February 8th, we had tour of Bombardier Aerospace. This tour is always well received as most of us have a great interest in aerospace. At this time we would like to thank the tour guides for making us fee; welcome. A special thanks to Donna Rodriegues for her hard work in organizing our tour.

We have not scheduled a meeting in March as so many are on holidays with the March break.

Norm Harding will start the month of April off with a technical session on "NDT Certification Past, Present and Future". Please watch for a flyer for further information.

In May, we are organizing another boat cruise. We have scheduled it for a Sunday and children are welcome.

As some of you know, Tony Skinner has gone west. Tony was he an integral part of the CINDE-Ontario Chapter Executive, and along with his wife, Judy, organized our annual car rallies. They will be hard to replace. We will try to find someone to continue this popular event.

I hope to see many of you at our up and coming furture events.

Nov/Dec 2003

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday season.

On November 16th, a tour was held at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, located in Mount Hope, Ontario. We saw displays of over 30 military aircraft dating from the Second World War up to today. It was horrifying to hear of the devastating fire in February 1993. However, we were pleased to hear of the immense efforts going into rebuilding what was destroyed.

December 20 th, marked the 13th Annual Christmas Dinner and Dance. We had a great turnout and the meal was delicious. I would like to extend my thanks to the staff at the Quality Inn in Oakville, for the great meal and grand hospitality. The evening made for a wonderful social event and many danced the night away. Special thank you to the sponsors that helped make this evening a successful one.

Our New Year brings for an exciting start with a technical meeting on Tuesday, January 12, 2004. We are pleased to announce that the topic will be, "Digital Radiography", the speaker being Gregory Pupchek, Director of Digital Imaging, VMI. Please be aware that the date and place have changed from the Meeting Programme. The session will be held at the Travel Lodge Hotel on the Lakeshore Road in Burlington, Ontario.

We will be confirming shortly another tour in February 2004. Mr. Norm Harding will be our guest speaker at the Technical Meeting on Surface Methods in April 2004. We must not forget the fantastic Board Cruise in May. We’ll keep you posted on these details.

I hope to see many of you at one or all of these events.

Sept/Oct 2003

On September 21st we held the second annual CINDE Car Rally. With engines revving, fifteen cars left the Royal Coachman on a beautiful fall day to compete for the coveted trophy.

The course was grueling. By the time the dust settled and the route was finished, we all gathered together and enjoyed a nice lunch. Our organizers tallied the scores one by one. No perfect scores were to be found but two new winners emerged. Congratulations to Jackie and Kate Stait with a top score of 41 out of 59. They were presented with the trophy and will try to maintain their status next year. Jeff Gilbert gave his best go at the course, but finished last. He was presented with a car and a map to help him for next year.

On behalf of everyone, I would like to extend our thanks to Tony and Judy Skinner for all their hard work and time spent in the preparation and running of this successful event. It was a great day for everyone and we look forward to doing it again next year.

On November 16, 2003 we will be touring the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, 9280 Airport Road, Mount Hope, Ontario. The tour will start at 10:00 a.m. and admission is as follows:

$10.00 per adult$8.00 per childFREE for children under 8 years

Registrations accepted no later than November 13, 2003. Please come and make this a family-outing.

On December 20, 2003, it is our annual Christmas dinner and dance. It will be held at the Quality Inn in Oakville. We will be sending out more details shortly.

I hope to see many of you at one or more of these events.

July/August 2003

I hope every one has had a good summer and is ready to face the new season.

The weather was perfect for gardening and camping, which is what I did this year.

I would like to welcome returning executive and note that we have a few new people who, I am sure, will bring new ideas to share with our members.

We are launching our 2003-2004 Ontario Chapter Meeting Programme with our Car Rally, Sunday, September 21st, 2003. We will start our engines at 10:00 a.m. from the Royal Coachman in Waterdown. The rally will finish there and follow with lunch and the presentations. Entrance fee is $5.00 per car. We had a great time last year so please mark it on your calendar.

Our CINDE Ontario Chapter - Meeting Programme has been printed and is enclosed in this Journal. At this time we would like to extend our appreciation to John Smit, Smit Graphics for, not only this year but previous years, complimentary printing of our Meeting Programme. Tuesday, November 11th, 2003 will kick off the first tour; arrangements will be finalized soon so watch for a flyer with details. We will finish the year 2003 off with our Christmas Dinner and Dance Saturday, December 6, 2003 at the Quality Inn, Oakville.

With the exciting new programme this year, we hope to entice more of you to the events. Friends and fellow co-workers are welcome. Please feel free to contact us for more information or any questions you might have. Keep in mind that this is your Chapter and it needs your support to keep going.

See you at the Car Rally,

    Judy Stait
May/June 2003

Well another season for the Ontario Chapter is coming to a close.

We've had an interesting year filled with tours and technical sessions. The turn out at these events has varied.

The tours are well attended and the social events hold their own, but we are having trouble at the technical events. If anyone has any suggestions to improve this, please contact myself or one of the Ontario Chapter Executive.

On April 8th we had our last technical meeting of the season. Rob Milner from Flir Systems Canada presented an interesting topic, "Real World Application of Infrared Technology for NDT". It was very well received by everyone present. I would like to thank Rob Milner for stepping in on such short notice.

May 23rd marked the evening of our Spring Social. A Murder Mystery night at the Bronte Yacht Club. Fun was had by all. The theme of the evening was "The 10th Annual Fowl Ball & Business Meeting" F.O.W.L. (Friends of Ornithologists World League).

Thank you to Murders Tastefully Executed Inc. for a wonderfully planned night and a special thanks to Norm Harding who performed as one of the character actors "Percy Popin Jay". Also, congratulations to "Joan Crawford" formerly known as our famous Alison Smit, who managed to figure out who the murderer was first.

We will start the new 2003 - 2004 year with a Car Rally on September, 14th. Everyone had a great time last year, so I hope to see new faces this year. We will be leaving from the Royal Coachman in Waterdown, so look for a flyer late in August.

At this time, I would like to thank the 2002-2003 Membership Executive (below) for a full year of hard work.

Anyone interested in participating on the Membership Executive for the new 2003-2004 year, please contact me for further details. We expect to hold our Installation of Officers in late summer.

I wish everyone a safe and happy summer season and look forward to seeing you in the Fall.

March/April 2003

A few years back, the Ontario Chapter hosted their first "Vendor’s Night". As this event was such a success a second Vendors Night was held February 11, 2003 and proved to be just as successful. We had 15 vendors and over 50 guests were in attendance. The vendors felt it was well attended and many people commented on how much they enjoyed the evening. Congratulations to the winners of the door prizes!

May 23rd will be the Ontario Chapter Installation of Officers to be held at the Bronte Harbour Yacht Club.

This will be followed by a dinner and murder mystery. Cocktails will be at 6:00 p.m. and dinner at 7:00 p.m. The cost is $40.00 a ticket and can be obtained from any member of the board. If you wish to reserve space please contact myself at Judith.stait@sympatico.ca.

We are working on the program for next year and the information will be available shortly, but don’t forget to mark the car rally on your calendar for September 2003. Last year was a blast.

Door Prize Winners:
  • Dena Delday, Sensor and Software, won a T-shirt donated by Ashtead Technology
  • John Stecjuk, Cooperheat MQS Canada, won a golf hat, donated by the Chapter
  • Bruce Curl, OPG, won a dinner voucher @ the next technical session, donated by the Chapter.
January/February 2003

On December 7th, the Ontario Chapter hosted their Annual Christmas Dinner/Dance at the Quality Inn, Oakville, Ontario. After a delicious prime rib dinner, more than 60 people enjoyed the music from -Terry Dee - Ark Management. There was a bevy of prizes, donated by National Office and the Ontario Chapter, to entice the guests. Many thanks to the organizers, especially Irene Hall.

April 8th, will be the last technical session for this season, so please join us for an informative evening as Agfa NDT Inc. provides us with a presentation on Digital Radiography. This is the way of the future and it should be of interest to everyone.

We will close the season with a Murder Mystery dinner at Bronte Yacht Club on May 23rd. Tickets can be obtained from any member of the executive.

Anyone with specific areas of interest or other ideas for future technical sessions please contact Judy Stait or Irene Hall.

November/December 2002
The Ontario Chapter held its first technical session of the season on October 8th at the Royal Woodbine Golf Club. Dr. John Baron was present to provide attendees with a very informative talk titled: "NDE Performance Demonstration - Who Needs Its?". Dr. Baron is currently Manager of Technology and Research for Ontario Power Generation and manages OPG's pilot project on inspection qualifications.

On November 12th, 25 people enjoyed a tour of B.F. Goodrich Landing Gear in Oakville. Our tour guides Maureen Howden, Sam Unsworth and Tim Davis took us through the different processes, from raw material to finished landing gear. We would also like to thank Brian Rolland for the security co-ordination.

May is the yearly social and installation of officers. Details are still being finalized so keep your eyes peeled.

We look forward to having you join us for one or all of these exciting events.

The Ontario Chapter Executive would like to remind everyone that the Annual Christmas Dinner Dance to be held on December 7th at the Quality Inn in Oakville. Tickets are available for $40.00 per person and can be ordered through the CINDE (905) 387-1655 or by contacting Judy Stait at judithstait@aol.com. There will be lots of prizes and good company.

February 11th from 6:00pm - 10:00pm the Ontario Chapter will be hosting a vendors night at the Royal Woodbine Golf Club. This will be a good opportunity to come out and see all the new equipment. April 8th will be a presentation on Digital Radiography at the Royal Woodbine Golf Course. This will be the last technical session this season and we would like to see a good turn out.

September/October 2002

On September 15, 2002, the Ontario Chapter held its 1st Annual Car Rally at the Royal Coachman in Waterdown. Teams gathered in the parking lot at 10:00 a.m. SHARP!

Our articulate organizers, Judy and Tony Skinner, handed out the "clue and riddle sheets". Take note - they were very difficult and you had to have your whits about you, paying close attention to every detail. Each team was sent out separately on the well-planned route. Later all teams met back at the Coachman for much fun and socializing. The results were tallied up by the firm of Skinner & Skinner. Judy Stait revealed the results and congratulated: the team of Ed Lee and Rick Breznik who squeaked by a few teams with the over all win of 37 out of 40. They were presented with a generous gift certificate and will be the first winners engraved on our annual trophy.

Where there is a winner, there has to be a loser and that was the team of "Doug Whitely (solo)", who finished up with a modest score of 13 out of 40. Doug was presented with a "REAL" car to help him win next year rally.

"A special thanks to Judy and Tony for all their hard work."

Upcoming Events: Tour in mid-November and don’t forget to mark your calendars for our Christmas Dinner and Dance, Saturday, December 7, 2002.

July/August 2002

I hope everyone has enjoyed the warm summer weather this year and are now ready to start another busy fall season.

The Ontario Chapter has been busy planning this year's calendar of events and we hope that there is something of interest for everyone.

All entrant groups will meet at the Royal Coachman on the corner of Hwy 5 and Main St. at 9:30am. At 10:00am the green flag will be dropped and the race will begin. After completing the rally all will meet back at the Coachman for lunch and the presentation of the trophy. The entrance fee is $5.00. Good luck to all.

On October 8th we will hold our first technical session and as in past years will be held at the Royal Woodbine Golf Course where Dr. John Baron will be speaking on CGSB Certification. Networking begins at 6:00pm, dinner at 7:00pm. This should be of interest to all technicians.

In November we will be hosting an industry tour with further information to follow.

December 7th will be the Annual Christmas Dinner and Dance, which will be held at the Quality Inn in Oakville.

Another industry tour is being arranged for January 2003.

April 8, 2003 will be our last technical session of the year at the Royal Woodbine Golf Course. It will follow the usual format and the presentation is Digital Radiography sponsored by Agfa NDT Inc.

I hope that many of you will find these events of interest and will make every attempt to attend. A lot of time and effort is given by our Executive, so please show your support by making this year our best year.

5th Annual CINDE - Ontario Chapter Golf Tournament
by Irene Hall

The Ontario Chapter held its annual best-ball golf tournament at Oak Gables in Ancaster. The day started off with questionable weather, but we were optimistic and the weather couldn’t have been better. The event was very successful with sixty-eight golfers teeing off for a shotgun start. The Ontario Chapter donated the cost of the golf carts which made the tournament finish without hesitation.

A wonderful BBQ dinner was provided after the golfing at which time all the socializing began. The organizers tallied the team results and determined the award winners. The results were as follows:

The returning champs: Tony Misheal, Bud Bell, Jim Dagnan and Charlie Tanner just squeezed in the overall win. On their heels with a difference between their score cards of -1 were Ernie Marsh, Steve Stavely, Randy Colins and Gerald Kent. The people’s choice for favorite and most challenged was again the team of Ruth & Peter Brady and Pat & Paul Leonard. As usual they were in good spirits and showed an overall improvement of 3 under last year’s +16. They were presented with a wonderful consolation prize (no hints intended). We feel very optimistic that they will once again improve their scorecard next year.

Congratulations goes out to Rob Adamenko who out drove Gerry Riviere for the Longest Drive and Bruce Eede for the closest to the pin. Both have a natural talent for the game, or perhaps practice makes perfect?

A 50/50 draw donation for The Children’s Wish Foundation was won by Judy Stait which made a nice start to her retirement, May 29th.

Doug Marshall and Irene Hall, CINDE, emceed the team draws and took the opportunity to thank the attendees for their support, and Jeff Moore and his staff at Oak Gables for the arrangements and meal. A special thanks to Bruce Eede, Spencer Eede and Darren Metzak for setting up the prizes and officially tallying the score cards, and also to Dan Gonzalez for his excellent photography.

Douglas Whitely, CINDE Membership President, thanked the organizers and congratulated the winners.

Please be reminded of the Car Rally September 15th. For more details call Judy Stait, Consultant, at (905) 690-2385.

March/April 2002

It's been a busy season for the Ontario Chapter.

On March 12th, the Ontario Chapter hosted a "Meet the Experts Night" at the Woodbine Golf and Country Club in Etobicoke.

Speakers were invited to share their knowledge within their perspective field, while the audience was able to obtain further updates through a question and answer session. Speakers included; Dave Cornall - Laser Fast, Bruce Metcalf - Chemetall Oakite, Norm Harding, Kathleen Kelly - Trikon Technologies, Bill Tarant, and Stu deWalle - ANDEC.

The Ontario Chapter Executive would like to thank all the speakers, especially the last minute ones, who stepped in and helped.

On April 9th, an enthusiastic turn out of young people interested in joining the industry attended the Ontario Chapter's "Career Night" at Mohawk College.

Individuals from various areas within the nondestructive testing industry, briefed an audience of 50 on "how they happened to fall into the NDT field" and their various experiences throughout.

Tours were organized for guests, allowing them to see demonstrations on six methods currently being used in the field.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our speakers; John Zirnhelt, Dent McIntyre, Louie D'Orazio, George Hoytema, Doug Whitely, Douglas Marshall for volunteering their time as well as our tour guides, demonstrators and especially Irene Hall for all their hard work.

This has been an interesting year with all the changes to the Executive, but hopefully we can settle down and provide you with an excellent program for next year.

If you have not yet heard, May 24th has been the date set for this year's Annual Golf Tournament. Once again it will be held at the Oak Gables Golf and Country Club in Ancaster, Ontario. As in the past, it will be a 12 noon shot gun start with dinner and awards to follow. Reserve your spot early, as spaces are sure to fill up fast. Cost is $40.00/person.

January/February 2002

On February 12th the Ontario Chapter hosted its first meeting for the year 2002.

18 people enjoyed a lovely dinner at the Royal Woodbine Golf Course followed by a very interesting and informative presentation of Michael Moles of R/D Tech. The topic was Ultrasonic Phased Arrays.

I would like to remind everyone of the "Meet the Experts Night" on March 12th also at the Royal Woodbine Golf Course. We will be starting at 5:30 with refreshments and the talks commence at 6:00 to 8:00 PM followed by finger food and a question period. It promises to be an interesting and informative evening.

On Tuesday April 9th we will be hosting a Career Night at CINDE, 135 Fennell Ave. at Mohawk College starting at 6:30pm. There will be a tour of the NDT labs with demonstrations and speakers from Industry and the Military.

The May Social will be held on the 25th and we are hoping to make this a car rally. Details will be available soon.

November/December 2001

CINDE members celebrated the start of the XMas season at the annual Christmas dinner/dance held at the Quality Hotel in Oakville.

A small but lively crowd, including several guests from the Canadian Welding Society, enjoyed a great evening of dancing, a traditional turkey dinner and lots of door prizes. For the more outgoing and energetic, there was a dance contest and line dancing organized by our disc jockey Lance of Ark Management.

Our thanks to Judy Stait, Ontario Chapter ViceChair for organizing this enjoyable evening and for taking the time to select and wrap all of the door prizes. Thanks also to the Canadian Institute for NDE for donating door prizes and wine for the tables and to all those who supported this event.

On behalf of the Ontario Chapter Executive, I would like to extend our best wishes to everyone for a very happy holiday and a prosperous New Year.

We have an exciting meeting schedule lined up for 2002 and look forward to seeing everyone at the next meeting on January 8th for a rare opportunity to tour Dofasco Inc. in Hamilton. See you there!

September/October 2001

Yankees 4 - Blue Jays 3

Yes this headline shows they lost, but that’s not the whole story. It doesn't say much about the late game rally that brought the Jays back to the edge of victory. Nor does it mention Rocket Roger Clemens tying a club record at 15 straight wins. A record that's lasted since 1912.

Among the 29,000 fans witnessing these stats were members of the Ontario Chapter of CINDE. We spent the evening at Windows On Sky Dome, a place I've seen on TV but never had the opportunity to visit. Windows has proven to be a popular spot with the Canadian Institute for NDE, with many members re-attending from the past three events held there.

I've heard nothing but compliments about the whole evening. The buffet was fantastic, the facilities were great and we all had a great time. In fact, I know some members are planning to go back on their own.

Many thanks to Judy Stait and her crew of helpers for organizing the evening. I know we are all looking forward to next year!

July/August 2001

The Ontario Chapter held its annual best-ball golf tournament at Oak Gables in Ancaster, Ontario on June 8, 2001. The event was very successful with sixty-four golfers teeing off for a 12-noon shotgun start. The humidity and hot sun caused some havoc for a few of our participants but for most it was a great day for golf.

Immediately following the competition everyone sat down to an enjoyable chicken B.B.Q. while the organizers tallied the team results and determined the award winners. The results are as follows:

  • The returning champions from 1998, Tony Misheal, Joe Tortola, Jack Caldwell and Bud Bell were able to repeat their win with a score of twelve under. This score set a new record for our annual tournament. The foursome of Peter Brady, Ruth Brady, Pat Leonard and Paul Leonard didn’t let their score of sixteen over par discourage them as they still managed to completed the course before the sunset.
  • The lady’s trophy for "Closest to the Pin" was won by Spencer Eede, who at 13 years old was closer than both her male and female competitors. Spencer was quite thrilled at her feat but not as proud as her Aunt Irene whom one would have thought it was her prize.
  • The men’s "Closet to the Pin" was won by Doug Schoenfeld, who dazzled his two partners Gavin Reed and Sherry Hunter by paring the hole himself.
  • The ladies longest drive for the second year in a row was won by Alison Smit.
  • The men’s longest drive was taken by Joe Fackelmann who smoked a perfect ball down the fairway and out driving the previous marker Tony Misheal by twenty yards.
  • Jeremy Wolfe won the final presentation for the second "Closest to the pin" before the team prizes were distributed. This hole was a charity hole with $150.00 being donated to the Children’s Wish.

Irene Hall, CINDE, emceed the organization of the team draws and took the opportunity to thank the attendees for their support, Jeff Moore and his staff at Oak Gables for the arrangements and meal and all the tournament sponsors for their donations and participation.

Douglas Whitely, CINDE Membership President provided a few words of gratitude to the organizers of the event and concluded that this was the most successful tournament to date. President, Whitely invited all the attendees to join the Ontario Chapter on September 5, 2001 to watch the Toronto Blue Jays host the New York Yankees from the Windows Restaurant at the Sky Dome at 6:30 p.m.

Finally, Samir Hazzi, Ontario Chapter Executive thanked all the golfers and sponsors for their participation and donations. On behalf of Chapter Chairman, Dan Kriving, Sam invited everyone to participate at the next Annual CINDE Ontario Chapter tournament in June 2002.

WITH GREAT THANKS AND APPRECIATION THE CHAPTER WOULD LIKE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE FOLLOWING INDIVIDUALS AND DONATORS:

On February 18th, thirty-five members and guests attended an industrial tour of Siemens-Westinghouse in Hamilton, Ontario. The attendees were divided into two groups and were treated to an excellent and informative tour led by Peter Looker, NDE Supervisor and Chris Eaton, NDE Specialist. Everyone was most impressed with the facilities and we extend our thanks to Siemens-Westinghouse for the time and effort put in to organizing and conducting the tour.

Friday May 25th, The Ontario Chapter had its Annual May Social event at the Royal Woodbine Golf and Country Club. This year’s event was a Casino night and was a huge success. The gaming tables available were Blackjack, Roulette, and Craps.

A DJ kept the crowd bopping by playing great music and also some fun games. All attendees were given fake money to play with, but if you lost out, you were at the mercy of the DJ to get more money. "Most Memorable" would be Peter Kaszuba doing "the Macarena" for $20.00.

Many special thanks to everyone at Nightlife Casino and Royal Woodbine G&CC, plus the work done by Alison Smit and Judy Stait to make this event a success!

To start off the 2001/2002 year, our next function is a Blue Jays game on Wednesday, September 5th. Your ticket price includes viewing of the game from the famous "Windows Restaurant" plus a huge Buffet meal. Ticket price is only $55.00 and seats sell fast. Don’t be disappointed, get yours today!

On October 10th, seventeen members and guests attended an industrial tour of Royal Laser in Etobicoke, Ontario. This was our annual joint meeting with the Canadian Welding Group (CWB) and it was their turn to host.

Royal Laser Tech Corporation is a family of companies that provide a broad range of services to its customers. Royal Laser is a leader in the production of quality metal parts and assemblies primarily to the automotive and industrial sectors. Their manufacturing base includes five locations based across greater Metropolitan Toronto. These locations represent 400,000 square feet of high bays, crane-equipped manufacturing capacity. The services include multi-axis laser cutting, tubular hydroforming, stamping, spinning, plasma cutting, abrasive water-jet cutting, conventional fabrication, cellular-robotics manufacturing and assemblies, powder coating and plating facilities.

Some of the manufacturing equipment witnessed included mig welding robots, automated press welders, several 5-axis laser cutting machines ranging from 1.8 to 4kW power levels and a variety of stamping presses of various tonnage, some with automatic transfer capabilities and groove forming machines for Poly-V and V-pulleys.

The group was divided up in half with Joe Peckan, Director of Quality leading the first group and John Cheung, Engineering Manager leading the second. The tour was approximately an hour long and was found to be very interesting to both the CWB and the CSNDT attendees. Many thanks to Ed Whalen of CWB for arranging this tour and Joe Peckan and John Cheung for guiding us through their facility.

July/August 2000

Oak Gable Golf and Country Club, Ancaster, Ontario, was once again the site of another successful golf tournament hosted by the Ontario Chapter. The day started out with tremendous rainstorms which delayed the shotgun start until1:30 p.m. but the wait was well worth it as the afternoon sun provided the fifty-two participants with perfect golf conditions.

Designed in the traditional best ball format, 13 teams competed for the title of champions (some internal competition was also under way between our larger supporters such as Babcock & Wilcox, the NDE Institute of Canada and Dofasco to mention a few).

After a super round of golf the team scores were submitted to the organizers for review to determine the best team score, highest team score, longest drives and closest to the pin. Congratulations to the team of Bill Carver Jr., Al Hines and Denis Norman who won the tournament with a score of 12 under. The High Ball Team, Peter and Ruth Brady, Terry Carswell and Stan Cathcart were 180 degrees on the card with a 12 over. The individual awards went to the following golfers: Bill Carver, Jr., and Alison Smit respectively, who took home the Men’s and Ladies Longest Drive; Al Hines and Terry Carswell were awarded the Men’s and Ladies Closest to the Pin.

Following a delicious barbecue and the presentation of the trophies, individuals were called upon to select a participation prize.

Special thanks is extended to Babcock and Wilcox for their large contingence and support, NDE Institute of Canada for organizing the tournament and CSNDT President, Douglas Whitely for his participation in the Chapter event.

March/April 2000

The NDE Institute of Canada was the location for the latest Ontario Chapter Meeting, held March 14th. The Institute was fully prepared with the office, training facilities, and staff shined and polished ready for viewing.

Doug Marshall presents Cindy Finley
with a plaque of appreciation

Ontario Chapter Chair, Cindy Finley opened the event, followed by a welcome from NDE Institute Managing Director, Doug Marshall.

Interest was high as approximately 60 people took advantage of the opportunity to meet the instructors, tour the training and office facilities, and view the training and examination equipment. Many questions were posed to the instructors and staff.

Following the tour, a reception filled with lots of goodies to eat and drink, allowed the opportunity for old and new friends to gather.

Thank you to the staff of the NDE Institute for a first class evening of enjoyment.

The Ontario Chapter wishes to send out thanks and appreciation to our meeting sponsors, Chapter Sustaining and Corporate Members for al their help I making this another great year with a great send off for the summer break to come in May and June.

Remember, we are always looking for key people who are so important to the accomplishments of our Chapter - The Volunteers. If you are interested in participating on the Ontario Chapter Executive, with a great group of people to help bring the benefits of being a CSNDT Member to our membership, please call Cindy Finley, UTEX Scientific Instruments (905-828-1313).

A quick note from the Chapter Chair

I would like to take a minute to reflect on the past year and to thank the executive of the CSNDT Ontario Chapter for all their hard work and perseverance.

You have worked diligently and unrelentingly over the year to put on a social and technical program that benefited the CSNDT membership far and wide.

We started the year in September with a ball game between the Yankees and the Blue Jays. Despite all our good planning, the Yankees beat the Jays with three grand slams in the last two innings. At our November meeting our friends from the Canadian Welding Society joined us at the Royal Woodbine Golf Club for a wonderful dinner and interesting talk on ultrasonic simulation. Later in November we donned our Sunday best and celebrated the last Christmas of the 1900’s at the Bronte Harbour Yacht Club. In March, we celebrated the changes at the NDE Institute with an open house and tour of their facilities. We were shown some of their new teaching tools and had a chance to mingle with the staff and many of their customers. The last technical session of the season was a talk by Rodney Pryde from Rotesco. He spoke to us about the latest developments in cable inspection systems.

Our last official meeting of the year is yet to come. It will be the Casino Night and Installation of Officers to be held on May 26th at the Royal Woodbine Golf Club. We expect it to be a very well attended evening and look forward to seeing you all there.

None of these events would have been possible without the enthusiasm, hard work and dedication of the Ontario Chapter Executive and I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your have been a great help and I look forward to another great year.

Thank you Alison, Dan, Judy, Doug, Peter, Heini, Nelson, Angus and Sam.

Cindy Finley, CSNDT Ontario Chapter Chairman

January/February 2000

The next meeting of the Ontario Chapter will be on April 11th, 2000 and once again will be held at the Royal Woodbine Golf Club. Special guest speaker Rodney Pryde of Rotesco will be present to discuss a new inspection system that has been developed by Rotesco for inspecting cables.

If you’ve never been to the Royal Woodbine Golf Cub, 195 Galaxy Blvd., Etobicoke, this would be the perfect opportunity to experience the beautiful surroundings and delicious food.

Watch for details on the success of the industry tour at the NDE Institute. Plans are also underway for our May Social. Keep your eyes and ears poised for the details.

Anyone wishing further information on Ontario Chapter events can contact Cindy Finley, 905-828-1313.

November/December 1999

The Ontario Chapter has indeed had a busy season, with two functions being held within an 18 day period.

The first, a technical meeting held in conjunction with the Canadian Welding Society on November 9, 1999 at the Royal Woodbine Golf Club in Etobicoke, was a huge success. All present enjoyed renewed friendships along with a great dinner.

Following dinner, Mr. Walter Weber of Utex Scientific Instruments captured the attention of all present with his presentation "Ultrasonic Technique Development Using Simulation Software".

The presentation included numerous illustrations and applications, in real time, of the dedicated imaging software for ultrasonic signal generation and soundpath travel in various materials and products mixes.

A question and answer session followed the presentation which kept Walter busy demonstrating the uses for specific applications.

The second, the NDE Institute of Canada/CSNDT Ontario Chapter’s Annual Christmas Dinner and Dance was a lot less technical in nature. Held once again at the Bronte Yacht Club, approximately 60 people came out to celebrate the start of the holiday season.

Nothing was lacking. An excellent meal was provided and staff were available to cater to your every whim. After dinner, "Sparky" provided a wonderful selection of music which kept the dance floor hopping all night.

Oh, and we can’t forget the terrific door prizes. Candles, Christmas ornaments, and many more items were taken home to be enjoyed over the holidays.

All in all another successful year for the Ontario Chapter.

September/October 1999

The Ontario Chapter’s 1999/2000 season began with great style once again. Dinner and game seating I the Windows Restaurant of the Dome proved to be excellent. What more could a diehard baseball fan, or even those less than diehard fans, ask for. Even though those "damn Yankees" won the game, who wouldn’t be excited seeing 4 home runs and 2 grand slams in one game. All in all a great night out with friends and associates.

Join the Ontario Chapter on Tuesday, November 9, 1999, at the Royal Woodbine Golf Club, 195 Galaxy Blvd., Etobicoke; as guest speaker, Mr. Walter Weber presents "Ultrasonic Technique Development Using Simulation Software. This event will be held jointly with the WSC.

Be sure to get your tickets to the NDE Institute/CSNDT Ontario Chapter Christmas Dance. Once again this year it will be held at the Bronte Yacht Club in Oakville. The date is November 27th and tickets are $35/person. As always come out and enjoy the dinner, dance and festive mood of the season.

July/August 1999

The Ontario Chapter held its annual best-ball golf tournament at Oak Gables in Ancaster, Ontario on June 25th 1999. The overnight rain and wet morning cast some doubt on any type of golf activities that day but the skies cleared, sun shone and activities began. The event was very successful with fifty-six golfers teeing off for a 12-noon shotgun start. The humidity from the earlier morning rain and hot sun caused intense humidity and havoc for some participants but as a team the final scores were very impressive.

Immediately following the completion of the golf everyone sat down to an enjoyable chicken B.B.Q. while the organizers tallied the team results and determined the award winners. The results were as follow is:

The returning champions from 1998, Tony Misheal, John Bronson, Peter Donato and Bud Bell were unable to repeat with a plus one score at the end of the day. The Hazzi team of Paul George, Tom Burgess, Doug Marshall and Sam submitted a minus four, which placed them in first until the final foursome submitted their score. Sal Messina, Joe Fackelman, Neil McArthur and Peter Dykstra collected the "best ball" trophies from Dofasco with an impressive seven under.

There were many opportunities for golfers to show their skills with two closest-to-the-pin holes, one hole-in-one and a longest drive. The $1,000 hole-in-one offered by Boomer’s Sports Bar was not claimed but the "hole Marshall", Bo Anderson, reached for the cheque on more than one occasion as quite a few NDT’ers showed their golfing skills. The ladies trophy and closest to the pin was won by Peg Johnson, and men’s by Paul George. The ladies longest drive was won by Irene Hall while Tom Burgess out drove the previous marker by thirty yards to take home the men’s trophy.

Peg Johnson from the Dudley team, won the final presentation for the second "closest to the pin". It was obvious that Peg Johnson was the tournament ringer as her name appeared on each hole prize and carried her tam to an even par score. Sam Hazzi presented Peg with a putter donated by Agfa.

As has become the tradition of the Ontario Chapter Tournament, no one goes home empty handed, therefore team draws were made for everyone to select a prize from the winners table.

Cindy Finley, incoming Ontario Chapter Chair thanked the organizers and Oak Gables for successfully arranging the event and took the opportunity to invite everyone to the next Chapter event which will take place at the Toronto Skydome.

Finally, Doug Marshall thanked all the golfers and sponsors for their participation and donations. Everyone was welcomed back to participate at the 3rd Annual CSNDT Ontario Chapter tournament in June 2000.

September 1998

This has been a busy summer for the CSNDT - Ontario Chapter Executive. A second golf tournament was held on August 28th and it was a great success! Participation was excellent and, thanks to our sponsors there were great prizes for everyone. Our thanks to CSNDT - National Office, NDE Institute of Canada, Smit Graphics, Babcock & Wilcox and Boomers Sports Bar & Eatery for their generous sponsorship.

We have also been heavily involved throughout the summer in assisting National Office with the Pan-American Conference preparations. I am pleased to say that the Conference was well attended and the technical program was excellent. CSNDT is to be congratulated for presenting such an excellent international event.

The Pan-American Conference provided an opportunity for several news-breaking announcements which will be of great interest to our membership. I'm sure that these highlights will be detailed in our President's Message so, be sure to read about them on page 2 of the Nov/Dec 1998 Journal.

Our Installation of Officers was held at the CSNDT Annual General Meeting during the Conference and I am sure that our new Executive Committee will provide an exciting program for the coming year. The new meeting schedule has been sent out to members and we welcome your participation and ideas on how to better serve our membership.

Please remember, YOU are the CSNDT membership, so make a commitment to participate and make a difference to both your profession and the NDT community.

January 1998

The first meeting of 1998 featured a tour of Orenda Aerospace Corporation in Mississauga, Ontario. Approximately thirty people attended the tour which was organized by Mr. Leon Kagan, NDT Level III Supervisor. Mr. Kagan also acted as our tour guide, with the assistance of Mr. Aldis Tora, Mr Sorin Simniceanu and Mr. Jack Gurfinkel.

Orenda is an impressive 750,000 sq. ft. facility which specializes in the repair and overhaul of gas turbine engines and the manufacturing of turbine engine components such as turbine nozzles, casing assemblies, combustion cases and liners to name a few. At the present time, Orenda has approximately 486 employees.

Our tour started with an overview of the company and its capabilities presented by Mr. Robert Hudson, Sales and Marketing Engineer. We were then introduced to the various NDT inspection processes used at Orenda, including LPI, MPI, UT, ET and Radiography.

Orenda has excellent NDT capabilities, including a state of the art, completely automated penetrant system, UT automated scanning system using immersion testing, at least four RT exposure rooms equipped with xray machines as well as MPI, ET, IR and dimensional inspection.

Our tour guides identified the various components and explained or demonstrated the NDT processes along the way. We observed the testing of an engine in one of the four test cells. These engines are run continuously for 150 hours after repair to ensure their performance. It was an interesting and informative two hours.

On behalf of the CSNDT Ontario Chapter members, I wish to thank Mr. Kagan for an excellent, well organized tour. Our thanks also to his assistants as well as to Orenda Aerospace for generously providing the opportunity to get a first hand look at their facilities.
